Softness and strength

Endurance and audacity

The rivers that tie us all together

In one coherent story of woman

Making a way in both the wasteland and the paradise.

-----

Two or three months ago, a friend was cleaning out her storage and gave me a collection of old newspapers. It was six or seven volumes of original papers from Winston Salem, North Carolina printed in the late 1800’s.

The pages had a deep patina and were starting to crumble around the edges.

Two weeks ago, I was carefully flipping through the volume from 1899, noticing the peculiar differences between the old newspapers in my hands and the ones we read today. One thing especially struck me:

The ads that were targeted toward women.

While I read the headlines and persuasive text, I was both giggling at how ridiculous it was and frustrated that anyone ever thought of women this way. I felt belittled. Pitied. Incapable. And a victim of my biology.

I love old things (whether I agree with their sentiment or not), especially when I can preserve them and tell a story at the same time. That’s why I created “Female Sensibilities” using those advertisements.

This painting is a refusal to let others assume my limits because of my femininity.

Whether you're a woman or not, I know there's a part of this you can relate to. A part of your identity that is unfairly judged. I hope this painting gives you as much joy and empowerment as it did me.
