Young Summers
The magnolia tree lived
in the center of my childhood,
arms wide,
blossoms like open hands
offering something sacred
and oversized.
They were huge,
those petals,
like nature had leaned in
and whispered,
go ahead, be bold.
I spent hours beneath them,
barefoot in the grass,
watching shadows flicker
across aqua blue light,
sun filtered through leaves,
the world softened
but still glowing.
That tree knew things
I didn’t yet,
about seasons,
about staying still long enough
to witness something small
become something new.
Now when I paint magnolias,
I paint that feeling,
cool light,
wide skies,
and the hush of a summer
that seemed like
it would never end.
